47114 a former
prototype class 48 locomotive |
| Scrapped in 2005 |

| Why
the attempt to save this loco? It’s a former prototype, that’s why. In
the past we have lost other prototypes in the shape of Lion, Kestrel, DP2
and Falcon, so it was a pity to see this locomotive scrapped. |

| When
built as D1702 in 1965 this loco was the first of five prototype class 48
locomotives. The five locomotives were powered by a Sulzer Vee engine,
instead of the twin bank Sulzer engine that went into the class 47’s.
This French built engine was the forerunner to the Sulzer 16LVA24
power unit, which went into the 4000hp Kestrel locomotive, which
eventually was sold to the USSR, and dismantled.
The five class 48 locomotives ran on British railways for four
years, before being deemed non-standard, and a decision was taken to
re-engine them with the Sulzer 12LDA28C power unit as fitted to the rest
of the 47 fleet. |
| I
would like to appeal for anyone who has information on the conversion
of D1702-06, that was undertaken in Crewe works between 1968-71, and also
on the SNCF 68000's, and SNCF 468000's class of locomotives, which had the
same engine. I would also be interested in any information of D1702-06 in
traffic as class 48's and how they performed. Contact
